Marc J. Spears is a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Curt Gowdy Media Award. As a senior writer for ESPN鈥檚听Andscape, Marc is widely regarded as one of the most influential storytellers in sports, celebrated for elevating narratives at the vital intersection of basketball, culture, race, and humanity.

With over 27 seasons of NBA coverage, Marc鈥檚 award-winning journalism has shaped the conversation at听Yahoo! Sports,听The Boston Globe, and听The Denver Post. Beyond the page, he is a fixture on ESPN鈥檚听NBA Today听and听SportsCenter, a co-host of Hulu鈥檚听The Conversation Project, and a featured voice听in听Netflix鈥檚听Starting 5.

Hannah Buchanan

Hannah Buchanan is a wife, mother,听grandmother, born听and bred听Texan, and most recently a Western听Governors听University听graduate.听

After听a challenging听upbringing and early struggles听through life, finishing college听wasn鈥檛听an option听for听Hannah. In 2021, following what she jokingly听referred听to as an 鈥18-year听spring听break,鈥 Hannah decided to give college another try and enrolled at Western Governors University. There, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management in October 2025听and acted as a student speaker听for听her fellow Night Owls at the March 2026 commencement ceremony.听听

Hannah currently serves as an Inflight Learning Instructor for Southwest Airlines, where she helps aspiring flight attendants navigate training and launch successful careers. She splits her time between the Dallas-Fort听Worth听metroplex and the Texas Panhandle.

听Hannah credits her life, family, and career achievements to Jesus Christ, believing that through His redemption, anything is possible. When听she鈥檚听not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughters at Disney World, reading, sewing, and shopping.听听听听

Jacobi Mitchell

Jacobi Mitchell听originally听hails from听the Bahamas,听and most recently Florida听bringing a uniquely disciplined and听resilient background to his academic and professional journey.听

A former elite athlete听in track and field听who competed at world-class and Olympic-caliber levels, Jacobi learned early听on听the听principles and听importance of preparation, perseverance, and performing under听pressure听that听later guided听his听transition into听a career in听technology and cybersecurity. He is earning his Master of Science in听Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University to formally align his lifelong passion for technology with his leadership experience,听and to deepen his ability听to protect organizations in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

While pursuing his degree, Jacobi balanced demanding professional responsibilities, leadership growth, and family life, navigating personal loss and major life transitions that further strengthened his resolve. The flexibility and competency-based model听that WGU听offers听 allowed him to continue advancing academically while working听full-time in the cybersecurity field.听

Jacobi currently serves as an Information Security Engineering Manager in the healthcare sector;听where he leads teams responsible for identity, endpoint, email, and cloud听security and听helps听shape enterprise-wide security strategy.

Outside of work and academics, Jacobi enjoys fitness, continuous learning, mentoring others in technology, and spending time with his family. He听remains听deeply committed to personal growth, leadership, and using his skills to make a meaningful impact both professionally and听personally听in his community.

Katelin Krause

Katelin Krause, is a dedicated educator currently based in Southern Illinois. Driven by a passion for higher education and a desire to share her knowledge with others, Katelin found Western Governors University to be the ideal fit for her to pursue听a听Master鈥檚听Degree in Teaching. With her deep commitment to accessibility and inclusion, Katelin found a way to better serve students with diverse learning needs听through her coursework and learnings.听

Her academic journey was marked by significant transitions, including moving four times while balancing a diverse array of seasonal roles; these experiences ranged from serving as a lifeguard at her local water park听and听the Aquatic Zoo, to sharing cinematic history as a tour guide at the iconic听A Christmas Story听House and Museum.听听

Katelin now channels her love of teaching into her career听and finds deep fulfillment in being an active member of her community. A true lover of extremes, she counts a Minnesota winter as her favorite season, finding a unique beauty in frozen lakes and a distinct calmness in frigid temperatures. In addition to her background in competitive swimming and figure skating, Katelin is an avid snowboarder and backpacker who is always looking for the next adventure.听

Makiya Newman

Makiya鈥疦ewman,听a 2026 graduate speaker in New Orleans,听originally from Arkansas and听now听Texas听local,听earned her Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management from鈥疻GU. She听pursued听this degree听to strengthen听her leadership skills and听expand听her impact on maternal and postpartum care.听

While completing her graduate studies,鈥疢akiya鈥痓alanced the demands of new motherhood and nursing leadership, an experience that further shaped her passion for advocacy, equity, and compassionate care for women and families. She works as a听nurse听supervisor on a mother/baby unit at鈥疊aylor Scott & White Health, where she focuses on team development, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.听

Outside of work and school,鈥疢akiya鈥痚njoys volunteering in youth and women鈥檚 organizations and spending meaningful time with her husband,听Eric,鈥痑nd听daughter, Madisyn.

Za鈥檋ra听Dabon is听local to听Louisiana听and most recently听earning听her Bachelor of Science in Special and Elementary Education (dual听licensure) from Western Governors University.听

Early in life,听Za鈥檋ra听faced challenges that made it difficult听for her听to connect听in the classroom听and听also听led her听doubting听her听own听abilities.听Za鈥檋ra听听simply did not know what she was capable of until a听seventh听grade听teacher, Mrs. Ruppert, helped her believe听in herself. By recognizing听Za鈥檋ra鈥檚听strengths and supporting her growth, Mrs. Ruppert听also听helped听Za鈥檋ra听earn her first听鈥淎鈥 grade听and inspired her to become an听educator herself.听听

Za鈥檋ra听has since听spent the past ten years working as a paraprofessional听and听also听earned her associate degree in 2014. After struggling to balance full-time work and returning to school, she found her path forward at WGU, where her professional experience allowed her to accelerate听through her coursework and听into her teaching career.听

Deeply rooted in her faith in Christ and love for her family鈥攙alues nurtured by her mother, Theresa鈥擹a鈥檋ra听enjoys music, worship, and spending time with her cherished听loved听ones.鈥

Alisha Glover

Alisha is graduating with a Master of Science in Management and听Leadership;听a degree she pursued to deepen her strategic听expertise听in organizational development and human capital. She navigated the rigors of this accelerated program while serving听at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), recently earning a permanent promotion to Chief Learning Officer,听after successfully leading her division through a significant government restructuring.听

In听addition to her federal leadership duties, Alisha is a certified听executive and听life听coach currently听finalizing听her Personal听Certified听Coach (PCC)听credential. She also serves as a Director of Music for her church and is a two-time published author, professional vocalist, songwriter, and producer. Alisha owns a small business specializing in听consulting and the arts听and is a devoted mom to a听鈥渟picy鈥澨齝hihuahua听named Keanu.

Commencement Ceremony FAQs

A commencement guidebook with check-in details, parking, maps, and more will be loaded onto the and emailed to each graduate two weeks prior to the ceremony.听

When registering for a commencement weekend, a graduate may choose the ceremony time that fits听their needs best听as long as听the event has not reached capacity.听All options can be seen at the event-specific registration link.听

All schools will听participate听in each ceremony.听

Due to听varying听space limitations, Alumni Celebration and Commencement guest count听policies听are different.听Please refer to the specific guest count policy on the weekend-specific page听for further information.听

Alumni听Celebration:听

Guest capacities听are implemented at alumni celebration events to accommodate as many graduates as possible while allowing everyone to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones.听Guest capacities may be adjusted based on venue size and availability.听

For the alumni celebrations in New Orleans, New York, Louisville, and Minneapolis graduates are invited to bring up to 6 guests.听

For the alumni celebrations in Seattle, Atlanta, and听Anaheim,听graduates听are invited to bring up to 4 guests.听

Commencement:听Guests are recommended to bring up to 8 guests to ensure our event听doesn鈥檛听reach venue听capacity.听

Tickets are not听required听to enter the听commencement听ceremonies in New Orleans, Louisville, Minneapolis, and Anaheim.

Tickets will be听required听for听the听commencement ceremonies听in听Elmont, New York at UBS Arena,听Atlanta, Georgia at Gas South Arena听and in Seattle, Washington at Climate Pledge Arena.听Event-specific ticketing information will be provided听8 weeks听prior to the event.听听

The names of graduates who physically attend an in-person commencement will be read as they cross the stage. All Virtual Commencement participants鈥 names will be read during the Virtual ceremony.听

No. Graduates are called to the stage by schools and not in alphabetical order.

Please arrive dressed in your cap and gown for the commencement ceremony. Due to the number of graduates and听precise听schedule, it is not practical to change into regalia at the venue.

*This may be adjusted according to venue requirements.听Additional听information will be included in the Commencement Guidebook听and on the event-specific website.

You can watch the commencement ceremony on the at any point after the start of the ceremony.

Ceremony Participation and RSVP FAQs

There is not a time limit on when a graduate may walk in a commencement. Graduates may only participate in one commencement ceremony per degree program completed.

Generally,听commencement听ceremonies听last听approximately听90 minutes.

Yes,听ceremonies have capacity听limits. We听suggest that you听submit听an RSVP to your desired ceremony as soon as you are eligible.

Please review the located in the student handbook, which outlines student eligibility to attend commencement. If you have additional questions, you can contact the Commencement Office at commencement@wgu.edu.

Graduates who wish to participate in an in-person or virtual commencement ceremony must meet eligibility requirements and register for their desired event.听

Eligibility Guidelines听 听

  1. Students must have submitted their Graduation Application for the completion of their degree program OR
  2. Students must have only their final course remaining, such as capstone or final certification, with the exception of direct hours for field experience or demonstration teaching.听
    • Students who meet the above final course requirements may submit an email to听commencement@wgu.edu with "Final Course" in the subject line along with desired commencement ceremony.
  3. Once eligibility has been confirmed the student or graduate MUST submit an RSVP via the commencement .听 听

If you don鈥檛 currently meet either of these requirements, wait to RSVP until one of the requirements is met.

No, the graduation application process is separate from submitting a RSVP to a Commencement Weekend. If the Commencement Office has granted a final course exemption and you have RSVP鈥檇 to your desired ceremony you do not have to have your graduation application submitted to walk at Commencement.

Yes. The鈥痗eremony RSVP form鈥痠s a separate process from the graduation application. The completion of the ceremony RSVP form reserves your seat at commencement and generates your听information on a听name reading听card听for听the announcer.鈥

After a graduate submits the ceremony RSVP form, a confirmation email is automatically sent to the email address listed on the completed RSVP form. Please check your junk inbox. If you do not see a confirmation email for your ceremony RSVP, please contact us at commencement@wgu.edu with additional questions.

No. Once registration has closed, no late additions, including day-of听(walk-up)听will be听permitted.听Registration for all听in-person听commencement events ends one month prior to the event date, and registration for virtual ceremonies ends听

No. As of January 2022, a graduate may participate in one ceremony per degree, either a virtual or in-person ceremony.

A听StagePass听is听a digital QR code听issued to each graduate registered for an in-person听ceremony听the week of commencement.听It听contains听the information that will听be displayed听on the screen as your name is听read,听and you cross the stage.听To access their听StagePass听at the ceremony, graduates will need their phone with them at graduate check-in and as they cross the stage.

Your听StagePass听will be emailed to you听on Monday and听Friday,听the week of听the听commencement听weekend.听If you do not receive it, please contact the Commencement Office at听commencement@wgu.edu听with the subject line, 鈥淪tagePass听Not Received鈥.

Prior to the conferral of degrees, bachelor's degree graduates wear听their听tassel on the right while master's degree graduates wear their tassel on the left for the entire commencement ceremony.

A graduate should wear academic attire听appropriate to听the awarded degree. The master's gown differs from a bachelor's gown. If you already have a cap and tassel, you can order a听master's听gown as an individual item on听our commencement vendor鈥檚 website.听Please note that the academic attire for a master's graduate includes a cap, tassel, master's gown, and hood.

Yes, WGU graduates affiliated with an honor society may wear society pins or honor cords/sashes/stoles to听represent听their academic achievements, affiliations, or identity听on their gowns.听

Teacher graduates affiliated with the WGU chapter of the听international honor society听of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) may order honor cords at听.听听

Graduates who are members of The National Society of Leadership and听Success听may wear honor cords听indicating听this affiliation.

Letter of Invitation for Abroad & Commencement Announcements FAQs

Yes, students may send an email to听records@wgu.edu听with the family member's full name, relationship to the student, and foreign address. Once provided, the Records Department will prepare documents听containing听information about the commencement and student's earned degree. These prepared letters will then be sent to the student to听forward听them to the correct parties. It may take 5-10 business days for the letters to be mailed to the student.
